I wasn’t taught that the rings represented each continent. I was taught that the colours represented every color of all of the flags combined on the planet at the time it was created in 1912. As most of us know, the name America comes from the primary name of explorer and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. Vespucci was preceded by Christopher Columbus, who’s regarded as having discovered America in 1492. Vespucci and Columbus each made 4 voyages which took them to South America, the Caribbean islands and Central America.
